What’s in a name?

After reading Steven Heller’s What’s in a Name? it got me thinking about all of the different usernames I use on the various accounts that I have (theidvip, arusiski06, arusiski, rusiskia). most of the time, I at least try use my last name in creating my online persona. However, there are times when AdamRusiski is taken as a username so using my real name isn’t an option and I must resort to creating some random username, such as theidvip. I agree that using one’s full name can create potential fear, as Heller says in his article. But, As Jessica Gladstone said in her reply to Steven’s Article, “You are more naked, less clever, more mundane and expressly more human.” There is no question that a real name at the end of a blog post is an indication that the person who authored the statement is taking responsibility, however that doesn’t necessarily mean that one who uses an alternative name isn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about owning up to your words and ideas posted on a site, but I also see the benefit in being anonymous. Sometimes things jest need to be said with out knowing who said it. Legitimate comments and criticism can still be said by an unknown author. For instance, say someone creates something and you spot something that is terribly wrong with it and you’d like to tell them so they can fix it but you don’t want to come off as the asshole- in this case saying a very much needed comment of criticism under a pseudonymous online name is understandable.

MAMA PALMA’S GOURMET PIZZA

In the mood for some one of a kind pizza, hand-made with the finest ingredients available from the market? Well you won’t find it at Mama Palma’s on 23rd and Spruce Street in Philadelphia. What you will find however is the worst customer service in the pizza industry. I had the pleasure of meeting the so-called manager of this fine establishment today and let me tell you, customer service is not a top priority to him. I’m not sure what has caused me to feel this way, maybe the staffs amazing social skills or the manager who needs to be restrained by co-workers after attempting to hurl a chair at me? yes, the manager tried throwing a chair at me…

So it all started while my girlfriend and I were walking back from the dog park today and came across this nice looking pizza place. We saw a big beautiful dog lounging at the feet of her owner, who was enjoying some of Mama Palma’s fine gourmet pizza in the restaurants outdoor seating section. My girlfriend sat at one of the many open tables with her miniature pomeranian as I went in to get a menu. Little did she know that moments later I would be walking out in mid argument, cursing out the manager whom was wielding one of the metal chairs that typically are only used for seating, not as a weapon as it was today. Upon acquiring the menu, the manager made a comment to me that they DO NOT SERVE DOGS! I asked him about the woman with the dog outside and he assured me that there was no dog. He was completely ridiculous and just kept saying “We don’t serve dogs”so I let him know how well I though he was handling the situation at hand and proceeded to leave. This is where the chair comes into play. He grabbed a chair as he followed me out and tried throwing it at me, but 2 employees and a man in his truck held him back as another employee struggled to keep him in a head lock.

So if your looking for some of Philadelphia’s fine pizza, go to Lazaro’s instead, loads cheaper and ten times better taste…and customer service.

redirecting a light switch – Instructable

Intro: the inconvenience of a misplaced light switch

This is a simple solution to the problem of inconvenience with a misplaced light switch. My roommate’s light switch has been strategically placed in the corner of his room, behind the door by an ingenious electrician. As a result, the person occupying the room must enter the dark room, averting disaster and avoiding the many obstacles in the way, to simply flick a switch, turning on the lights. To solve this dilemma, I will simply redirect the switch to a more appropriate place.

Step 1: Components

Parts
8 eyehooks

rope/string/twine/cord/etc…

Tools

Electrical Tape

Scissors (or any cutting device)

Step 2: Placing the eye hooks

Place two eyehooks above the doorframe, one at each corner.

Place another eyehook on each side of the door frame, at light switch level.

Place an eyehook above and below the light switch.

Place two eyehooks where you would like the new switch to be.

Step 3: Cut string

The string needs to be cut into two six-foot pieces. These pieces of string will be the on/off switches.

Step 4: Pull string through eyehooks

Simply run the string through the eye hooks one by one until you reach the light switch.

Step 5: Attach string to switch

Using electrical tape, connect the two strings to the light switch, cut off any extra slack.

Step 6: Enjoy the improvement!

The New Sound – tv edition

while lounging around today, a thought came to me. What ever happened to the sound a television makes when it is turned on or off? I recall turning on a tv and hearing one simple sound. Now, you turn on a tv like my roommate’s flat-screen and it plays a little jingle and a short visual intro. It’s crazy how such a little feature changed so much over the years.

Instructables is an interesting site where its members can share pictures and videos instructing others on how to do a particular task. It conveniently groups and categorizes uploads based on topics of similarities. Over all, I think it’s a good site, I just wish there was a way to weave out all the awful ones. Maybe there could be some sort of higher application process that would get rid of the crap that some people post.
